How the lane plays · Gold – Platinum
Two bruisers who both want short trades: Volibear wins by landing Q's stun and sticking with W, Garen by regenerating and punishing missteps with Q, E and R.
Garen's Q has a short cooldown and his passive heals him when left alone. Look for Q (Thundering Smash) into W (Frenzied Maul) trades, then back off so he can't heal for free.
With E (Sky Splitter) up, you can slow him on approach and take the shield in the blast. Trade when his Q is spent; his E spin hurts if you stand still.
His R (Demacian Justice) executes, so keep your health high before long fights. Your R (Stormbringer) gives bonus health and a slow to engage, and it can disable his tower.
Play it aggressive
After he spends Q on a minion or a miss, walk up and land your Q stun, then W and AA.
When your E is up, drop it on his approach path to slow him and take the shield.
Once your R is up and he is mid-health, leap in for the slow and a longer fight.
Play it safe
When his Q is ready, expect a silence in the trade, so wait or bait it first.
At low health, stay out of his reach. His R can finish you, and his passive heals him if you leave him alone.
If you waste mana early on E and Q, you can't contest the wave, so watch your mana.
Their threats · Riot's cooldowns
Gives him speed, breaks your slows and silences you on the next hit. Expect it to cancel your E slow and to stop your spells mid-trade.
His spin deals steady damage if you stay close. Trade in short bursts with W and step out instead of standing in the full spin.
An execute on low-health champions. Don't hover at low health near him; shake off poke and recover before you commit to an all-in.
