How the lane plays · Gold – Platinum
Vel'Koz outranges Blitzcrank by a huge margin and wins by poking safely, but one Rocket Grab turns the lane around.
Poke with Q (Plasma Fission) and W (Void Rift) from max range. Stay out of his Q line behind minions so a grab has to hit them first.
Use E (Tectonic Disruption) as a defensive tool when he closes in. Keep poking, and when his Q is on cooldown, step up and push the wave.
R (Life Form Disintegration Ray) gives a long-range punish. His R can silence and strip shields, so don't count on a shield or follow-up spell in a close fight.
Play it aggressive
When his Q is on cooldown, walk up and poke with Q then W. He has no way to close the gap.
After he wastes a grab on a minion or misses, trade with Q, W and AA from range.
Push the wave with W while he is low on mana, then look for a free poke or recall.
Play it safe
Don't stand in a straight line with him in open lane when his Q is available. One grab ends the trade in his favour.
If he builds Overdrive speed on W (Overdrive), stop walking forward and keep your distance. He closes fast.
Avoid standing close to him at level 6. Static Field's silence can stop your combo, so use R from range.
Their threats · Riot's cooldowns
Rocket Grab drags you into his fist and E. Stand behind minions so the hook hits them first, and sidestep once he commits.
Power Fist knocks you up and hits for double damage. Stay out of 300 range and use your E first when he walks up.
Static Field silences and strips shields nearby, which can cut off your combo mid-trade. Don't plan to land a full combo while standing next to him.
