Sett vs Volibear · Top

The lane in ten seconds, then the whole brief — written by our coach for your level, from Riot's own kits for patch 16.21. Every number checked against Riot's data. Options, never orders.

Written for

The same lane is not played the same way in Silver and in Diamond: pick your level, the advice changes. Signed in, Olymps opens on your rank. Coaching, not statistics — the abilities and Riot's cooldowns are the same at every level.

The key

Trade when his Q is spent; he stuns first, so respect it.

Volibear Q — Thundering Smash
Watch · Q · Thundering Smash12 → 10 s

Stay out of reach while it's up.

Sett E — Facebreaker›Sett Q — Knuckle Down›AA
Your window

Right after his Q is used.

How the lane plays · Gold – Platinum

Two brawlers who want to stick to each other: Volibear wins by landing his stun and W on a short cooldown, Sett wins by trading right after those are spent.

Levels 1-2

Volibear's W (Frenzied Maul) comes back fast and heals him, so avoid long auto trades. Short Q (Knuckle Down) pokes when W is down are cleaner.

Levels 3-5

With E (Facebreaker) up, a full trade is yours once Volibear's Q (Thundering Smash) is spent. Take hits to charge W (Haymaker), then cash it in.

Level 6+

Volibear's R (Stormbringer) can start a dive or disable your tower. Keep the wave near you, and use your own R (The Show Stopper) to win fights.

Play it aggressive

After his Q is spent on a minion or wasted, walk up with Q (Knuckle Down) and look for a short, full trade.

When his W is down, E (Facebreaker) into Q's two hits is a trade he can't answer well.

Bank damage by taking his poke, then fire W (Haymaker) as a shield and punch into a trade.

Play it safe

When his Q is ready and you have no space, a stun into W and autos can cost you a lot of health.

Don't stand in the lightning bolt: the slow and his shield together make for a bad fight.

When his R is up, don't push far past your tower, because he can leap in and the tower goes down.

Their threats · Riot's cooldowns

Volibear Q — Thundering Smash
Q · Thundering Smash12 → 10 s

Gives him speed, and the first attack he lands stuns you. Stay out of his reach while it's up, or trade only once it's gone.

Volibear W — Frenzied Maul
W · Frenzied Maul5 s

Marks you, then the second cast deals extra damage and heals him. Don't extend a long trade into a second W.

Volibear E — Sky Splitter
E · Sky Splitter16 s

The slow lets him close in and shields him when he stands in the blast. Sidestep the bolt and don't fight inside it.

After his Q is gone and you've taken some hits: pull in, hit with Q's two attacks, then cash W.

How this is written

Our coach reads both kits exactly as Riot publishes them for the current patch — abilities, cooldowns, costs, ranges — and writes the lane for one level at a time: Iron – Silver, Gold – Platinum, Emerald – Diamond, Master+. Every number in the text is checked against Riot's data; a line that cites anything else is dropped. No win rates, no tier lists: coaching, not statistics.
